Truvia, the popular plant-based artificial sweetener, does more than just sweeten iced tea and coffee. It also kills insects!

Researchers have found that Erythritol, which is the main ingredient in Truvia, is also an insecticide.  Fruit flies that were fed the chemical had an average lifespan of just under six days, while flies that weren't fed the chemical lived between 38 and 50 days.

Scientists say the chemical is perfectly safe for humans and more research is going to be done to see if it could be an effective form of pest control. (CBS News)
