Earth Day: Recycling Rules You Probably Don’t Know

Earth Day is Sunday, so it’s probably a good idea to talk about recycling.

Do you know that the average American produces 4.5 pounds of trash each day? A lot of that can be recycled, but only 30-percent is. Here are some rules to help you bump up that number.

  • Sort as you go. It saves a lot of time.
  • Paper, not plastic. Those plastic store bags, which are great for small garbage cans around the house, are not easy to recycle. Use paper bags instead. And drop off your used plastic bags at the grocery store for them to recycle.
  • Know your local recycling rules.
  • Make a plan for the other stuff. Batteries, electronics, and other household items can be recycled. You just have to find out where to take them.
