A 21-year-old man lost half his hand while attempting to shoot a firework mortar from the sunroof of a car in Middle Tennessee, according to the Murfreesboro Police Department. A woman who was with him also suffered injuries in the explosion, according to police. The Murfreesboro man told Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services the mortar exploded in a tube he was holding in his left hand. Medical personnel searched the area attempting to preserve parts of the man’s hand but couldn’t locate anything, police said. The man was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to be treated for major injuries. A 20-year old female in the vehicle with the man suffered head injuries, minor burns to her neck and upper back, and complained of ear pain. Paramedics treated her at the scene, police said. Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department Chief Mark Foulks said the incident should serve as a reminder to never hold fireworks in your hands and always use a flat surface lighting them.
