Shopping: Abandoning Your Cart Could Help You Save On Black Friday

Black Friday is tomorrow and those serious about shopping are gearing up to take advantage of all the deals retailers will be offering. But to save even more, one expert actually advises not clicking “buy now” on the items in your online shopping cart, at least not for a few days.

According to NBC News senior consumer investigative correspondent Vicky Nguyen, to get the most bang for your buck, waiting is the name of the game. She explains that if you abandon your cart and leave the website for a few days, you could get a better deal. “You might get an email from that store saying, ‘Hey, I think you forgot these items in your cart?’” Nguyen says. And to entice you to come back, the store may offer you an additional discount.

  • But if you don’t want to wait because you’re worried about items in your cart selling out, Nguyen suggests looking on social media for sales codes and offers that stores may give out.
  • She also recommends finding discounts on cashback apps like RetailMeNot and Rakuten and browser extensions like Camelizer and InvisibleHand that can help you find the lowest prices online.

But no matter what kind of discounts you find, Nguyen stresses that it’s not worth going into debt over gifts, so it’s important to treat credit cards like cash this holiday season. She says, “If you’re going to use a credit card, then use the ones that have additional bonuses and points, so that you can apply those to your purchases.”
