The northern white rhinoceros is a step closer to extinction with the death of the world's last male northern white rhino.
The 45-year-old rhino named Sudan died yesterday at a conservancy in Kenya, where he'd been kept since 2009. Veterinarians say Sudan's health had gotten worse in recent weeks because of a serious leg infection. The rhino was no longer able to stand and his veterinary team decided to euthanize him.
Sudan’s death leaves only two females to carry on. Researchers did save some of the male’s genetic material in hopes of impregnating one of the females.
