Rescue Dog Detects Owner’s Skin Cancer

Victoria, a one-eyed Treeing Walker Coonhound, saved her owner’s life by sniffing around a lump on her nose until she went to the doctor to get it checked out.  Lauren Gauthier had only rescued the dog eight months before, and Victoria isn’t any special sort of detection dog, but because she was so persistent, Lauren had the spot checked out.

Little Victoria would smell a specific part of Lauren’s nose and then lean out to look at her owner before leaning in to put her nose on Lauren’s again.  She did it over and over until Lauren finally had her doctor take a look and it turned out to be basal cell carcinoma skin cancer.

Lauren had surgery to remove the cancer and she’s incredibly grateful her new dog caught it early on. “There’s the old term ‘who rescued who’ and I think it’s especially true in Victoria’s case,” she says.
