A 400-year-old painting found in an attic in Des Moines, Iowa could be worth millions.
The painting, "Apollo and Venus" by late 16th century and early 17th century Belgian painter Otto van Veen, was found in Des Moines' historic Hoyt Sherman Place art complex two years ago while someone was looking for Civil War flags in a storage room.
The painting was found with layers of discolored varnish and poor restoration work from decades ago. Robert Warren, executive director of the venue, thought it was worthless. Boy is he wrong! There was even a tag indicating the painting had once hung in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
It ended up taking art experts four months to return the painting to its original state. There are no plans to sell it, just display the work.
