A Canadian fertility doctor has been accused of using his own swimmers to father 11 children with his unknowing patients. According to a lawsuit, Dr. Norman Barwin was supposed to use the seed from the male in the couple for insemination or use that of an anonymous donor, but instead used his own making him the biological father of 11 children.
Peter Cronyn, a lawyer who represents the families, says he thought they would find proof Barwin was the father of some of the children, but didn’t think it would be so many. "When people have discovered that their children are not as what was intended," Cronyn says. "It's a very distressing discovery."
The allegations date back as far as the 1970’s out of the fertility clinic at Ottawa General Hospital. In that case, at least 16 other children were found to not have biological matches with the men the believed were their fathers. Barwin had been suspended back in 2013 for two months after admitting to wrongfully inseminating four women. His most recent case is from the early 2000’s.
