Protecting Your Child Online Starts With Hashtags

Before you post photos or info about your child on social media, experts want you to know how to safeguard them.

The Child Rescue Coalition has curated a list of hashtags that predators commonly view for their next victim. There are more that 100 on the list, so that begs the question… should we avoid them? In most cases, the organization says yes.

Some hashtags to stay clear of are: #bathtimefun, #toddlerbikini, #nakedchild, #modelingchild, and #skinnybabybooty.

Carly Yoost, founder of the organization says we tend to forget that predators come from all walks of life including police officers, pediatric oncologists and other respected community members.

Before you post a photo of your child, Yoost says to ask yourself these questions:

  1. Why am I sharing this?
  2. Would I want someone else to share an image like this of me?
  3. Would I want this image of my child viewed and downloaded by predators on the Dark Web?
  4. Is this something I want to be part of my child’s digital life?
