The Winchester-Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau and its partners are pleased to announce a schedule of guided tours that will take place this spring through fall. A wide variety of tours are available for residents and visitors to learn about the Winchester-Frederick County area and its rich history. In addition, the City of Winchester is celebrating its 275th anniversary in 2019, and numerous events are planned to commemorate the city’s unique past. Guided History Walking Tours of Old Town Winchester take place from May through October on the second Friday of the month at 6pm* and the third Saturday of the month at 10am. The tours last about an hour, and the cost is $10. Reservations can be made by calling the Winchester-Frederick County Visitors Center at (540) 542-1326. Participants meet the guide at 2 N. Cameron Street, Winchester. (*No tour October 11, due to Oktoberfest event)
Guided Civil War Tours of Historic Stephens City are available June through October, on the fourth Saturday of the month at 10:30am. The tour cost is $5, and participants meet at the Newtown History Center, 5408 Main Street, Stephens City. Advance reservations are required by calling (540) 869-1700.
Who’s Buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery? Walking Tour is offered on select Saturdays, May 18, July 20, August 17, September 21, and October 19 at 1pm. The cost is $5. Meet the guide at the gatehouse of Mount Hebron Cemetery on East Lane, Winchester. Call the Winchester-Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau for reservations at (540) 542-1326.
Kernstown Battlefield Walking Tours take place every Saturday, May through October, at 11am and 1pm. For reservations call (540) 869-2851. Tours are free. Meet at the battlefield, 610 Battle Park Drive, Winchester.
Sightseeing Express Trolley Tours are scheduled for Saturday, June 8 and Saturday, October 26, at 10am. Hop aboard the trolley for a one-hour sightseeing excursion of Winchester and see 60 sites in 60 minutes! A professional tour guide will entertain you while pointing out historical sites, museums, and other attractions. Meet the guide and the trolley at the Winchester-Frederick County Visitors Center located at 1400 S. Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester. The cost is $10. Register by June 3 for the June 8 tour. Register by October 21 for the October 28 tour. Participants must register in advance by calling Winchester Parks & Recreation at (540) 662-4946.
Civil War History Trolley Tour will be held on Saturday, August 24, at 10am. This special themed tour will take you to the battlegrounds of the six major battles fought in and around the city of Winchester. Meet your guide and the trolley at the WinchesterFrederick County Visitors Center located at 1400 S. Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester. The cost is $10. Register by August 20. Participants must register in advance by calling Winchester Parks & Recreation at (540) 662-4946.
Cedar Creek Battlefield Driving Tour is led by a National Park Service Ranger, and is offered on the first Friday of the month, June through October, at 2pm. The tour lasts approximately two hours, and is free of charge. For reservations call (540) 869-3051. Meet at the National Park Service Visitor Contact Station, 7712 Main Street, Middletown. In addition, Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park offers free “History at Sunset” programs on select Fridays, at dusk, June through October. Call (540) 869-3051 for more information.
