Want to help your kid be the best that they can be? New research shows getting them up and moving, even just a little bit, can help. Most parents do everything they can to help make sure their kids are on the right track and a new study finds a small amount of daily activity is key.

Researchers from the University of Stirling in Scotland worked with nearly 7,000 elementary school-age kids for the study, first testing their cognitive function and working memory. Some of the kids then took part in 15 minutes of physical activity a day, either brisk walks or running. After keeping that up for a few months, the kids’ cognitive function was tested again and it turns out, that short amount of daily fitness has a positive effect on their brains.

The kids who ran or walked 15 minutes a day saw both mental and physical improvements. After three months, the group of children who took part were not only more physically fit than those who didn’t run or walk, they did better on memory and cognitive function tests as well. Study authors point out that this improvement happened with just a small amount of active time and that 15 minutes is a goal that would be easy to achieve for the whole family by taking a walk together after dinner.
