The mayor of a small town in Mexico is marrying an alligator.

A festive wedding ceremony was held late last week in the southern state of Oaxaca, that saw Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa marry a small alligator wearing a white wedding dress.

The wedding was part of ancient tradition dating back to pre-Hispanic times in Mexico, where some indigenous cultures believe the alligator is a deity representing mother earth. Oaxaca is rich in indigenous cultures that still use their traditional languages and rituals.

The ceremony is part of the ritual to bring prosperity to the region. Victor explains "We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river.”

And yes, he kissed the gator’s snout, but to avoid being bitten it was tied shut.
