A Michigan woman says all she could do was laugh when a scammer called her home, told her she was a big winner in the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes, and then told her she would have to send them a cashier’s check for $4,800 to claim her prize. Sweepstake scams are common, with people being told they need to “prepay taxes” to receive their money, but no legitimate sweepstakes or contest requires any money upfront, but an increasing number of the scams are being reported.
