We’re learning what splooting is thanks to squirrels in New York City.

The heat has squirrels in New York City acting a little funny. The parks department posted a picture on Twitter of a furry guy sprawled out in the shade. It went viral and plenty of questions were asked. Officials said not to worry, explaining squirrels like to keep cool by splooting - or stretching out - on cool surfaces.

That's how they reduce body heat, which is sometimes referred to as heat dumping. They aren’t the only animals that sploot either. Many four legged friends stretch their bodies out face down on a cool surface.

If you have cool tiles in your home, your pet is most likely to sploot there.
