Bargain hunter Will Sideri stumbled onto something more valuable than he expected at an estate sale in Maine. He was looking for a KitchenAid mixer, a bookshelf, or vintage clothing, but instead, he found a framed document hanging on a wall with elaborate script in Latin and a sticker that said “1285 AD,” which he bought for $75.
Academics have now confirmed that it was from The Beauvais Missal and dated to the late 13th century. Experts say it was part of a prayer book and priests’ liturgy and could be worth as much as $10,000, but Will says he doesn’t plan to sell it. It was last used about 700 years ago in Roman Catholic worship.
