Self-Flying F-16 Takes Off, Fights Aircraft, And Lands Without Human Help

A modified F-16 fighter jet was flown completely by artificial intelligence in tests last month at a US Air Force base in California. The jet performed takeoffs, landings, and combat maneuvers for over 17 hours with no human interaction.

It’s the first time AI has been used to fly an actual jet; it had previously only been tested in computer simulations of F-16 dogfights. The program has a previously-announced goal of having a real-life duel between a human-piloted jet and one being flown by AI next year.
