Report Shows Coffee Is Still America’s Favorite Beverage

Does your day not really begin until you’ve had your first cup of coffee? A lot of people feel that way, in fact, Americans love coffee so much, they drink 517 million cups of it a day, according to the National Coffee Association (NCA). New research from the group finds more Americans drank coffee in the past day than any other beverage, confirming it’s still the country’s favorite drink.

The NCA’s National Coffee Data Trends report is the longest-running study of Americans’ coffee drinking habits and its latest edition is out, revealing:

  • The pandemic didn’t really change how much coffee Americans drink - an average of 2.9 cups a day - but it has had an effect on where people drink it. Now 83% of those who had coffee in the last day had it at home, up 4% from January 2020. Another 35% had coffee away from home, which is down from 41% in January 2020.
  • The most popular specialty coffee drink is a three-way tie for lattes, espressos and cappuccinos, which were enjoyed by 16% of coffee drinkers in the last day.
  • Around a third (32%) of coffee drinkers had flavored coffee within the last week. Vanilla is the most popular flavor, followed by mocha, hazelnut and caramel.
  • As for the way people make their coffee, the most popular method is drip coffee makers (41%), followed by single cup brewers (28%), cold brewing (11%) and espresso machines (9%).
