Some Lynchburg, Virginia parking meters have been refurbished to help local charities. Since 2020, 10 lime green parking meters around the city have been collecting pocket change to dole out to charities. Local organization Change for Change Caring Meters collects the change to help others.
Peggy Dolley and Libby Fitzgerald founded the org after being inspired by the town of Charlottetown, Canada using the meters to help those in need. It took some doing and permits, but the meters were installed in Lynchburg. Once the meters hit a thousand dollars in change, they tell matching partners and they pitch in some more money.
So far the effort has raised thousands of dollars and $32-thousand has been distributed to small, local charities chosen by a committee of community members.
