It was supposed to be a nice family day at the beach for Charlotte Russ and her family. Instead, she walked away getting hammered with an $88K fine. Russ and her family took a road trip to Pismo Beach, known as the “Clam Capital of the World,” where her kids walked away with 72 of what they thought were seashells…not aware that a fishing license was required to collect clams. That’s when The Department of Fish and Wildlife stepped in and handed her a ticket. Russ’ jaw dropped when the fine arrived in the mail for a grand total of $88,993, but, fortunately for her, a judge was sympathetic to her plight and chopped that fine down to a more manageable $500. More importantly, Russ says her kids have now learned the difference between a clam and a seashell.
