Around 50-thousand years ago, the giant bird Genyornis newtoni roamed Australia's swamps. Scientists have now uncovered the most complete skull of this species, revealing it stood, resembling a "giant goose" with small wings and large legs. This bird, related to early waterfowl, likely went extinct due to early humans hunting its large eggs.
The skull was found in Lake Callabonna, South Australia, and shows features like a strong bite and wide gape, similar to a parrot. How are we just finding it now? Researchers believe the drying of Australia's freshwater sources and human activity contributed to its extinction.
