High School Principal On Leave After His Pep Rally Dance With Mascot

The new school year is just getting started, but one principal in California is already on administrative leave after his behavior at a pep rally was deemed inappropriate. Robert Nunes is in his first year as principal at Buhach [[Buhack]] Colony High School and at the back-to-school event last Friday, he was dancing with the school mascot, Thor. But his moves left some parents concerned.

A student filmed the dance and his father, Ryan Attebery, shared it to his own Facebook profile over the weekend.

  • In the video, Thor is dancing in front of Nunes, who’s sitting in an office chair in the middle of the gym floor.
  • The principal then fires a cannon filled with gold confetti and gets up, trading places with Thor.
  • The mascot sits in the chair and Nunes appears to be dancing suggestively in front of Thor.
  • He then yells in a mic to the students, “What happens at Buhach, stays at Buhach,” at the Vegas-themed pep rally.
  • Attebery’s post asks, “Am I a square or was this weird af for a principal to do?”

The dad says he shared the video to let other parents know, “Hey, man, like this is what your kids see. You guys have the right to see it.” But Attebery says he was “shocked” to find out Nunes has been put on administrative leave over it, adding, “For all I know, he’s a great guy, but at the same time, it doesn’t make it any less weird.”

“This decision comes as part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment," Merced Union High School District spokesperson Viviana Fuentes explains. “The District is conducting a comprehensive review of the situation. While the investigation is ongoing, Mr. Nunes will not be participating in any school-related responsibilities or activities.”
