The 8 New Emojis Coming Soon

For some people, no text or social media post is complete without an emoji or three. Whether you use them in practically every communication or not at all, emojis are a part of modern life and now we’re about to have even more to choose from. The Unicode Standard, the official emoticon standard that’s part of the Unicode Consortium that’s responsible for creating new emojis, has revealed that eight new ones are coming our way soon.

“Unicode Version 16.0 has been released!” the Unicode Consortium tweeted. “Bringing the total number of characters to 154,998.”

  • It turns out, Version 16 of the Unicode Standard adds 5,185 characters total, including new scripts.
  • The last time we got new emojis was last September, when more than 100 were added, including a lime, a phoenix and broken chains.
  • The most popular emojis change all the time, but as of the beginning of this month, they include a red heart, the green check mark, the fire symbol, the crying face and sparkles.

The eight new emojis hitting smartphones soon:

  • A face with under-eye bags
  • A fingerprint
  • A purple splat symbol
  • A turnip
  • A leafless tree
  • A harp
  • A shovel
  • The official flag of Sark, an island in the English Channel
