Meet Lucas, The First Gerber Baby With Down Syndrome

18-month-old Lucas Warren from Georgia is the first child with Down syndrome to win the  Gerber  baby contest. Parents of a baby girl with Down syndrome react to the positive news.

A one-year-old just made history by becoming the very first baby with down syndrome to win the annual Gerber baby photo contest.  Congratulations are in order for Lucas Warren, the one-year-old from Dalton, Georgia who was deemed the winner of the Gerber Baby photo contest. And while this contest is done annually since its start in 2010, this year’s winner is a very special baby.  ZOOM: In fact, Lucas made history and headlines by being the first child with Down Syndrome to be named a Gerber Baby out of a whopping 140,000 entries!  Lucas, as well as his parents Cortney and Jason, all made their debut on the Today show to help announce his win. During the interview, Cortney talked about what a happy baby Lucas while Jason told Today that he hopes Lucas’ win will impact everyone and bring awareness to the special needs community. Jason said QUOTE, “We’re hoping this will impact everyone – that it will shed a little bit of light on the special needs community and help more individuals with special needs be accepted and not limited. They have potential to change the world, just like everybody else.” On top of Lucas’ adorable TV debut, Bill Partyka, the CEO and president of Gerber said it was Lucas’ smile that captured the hearts of those at Gerber. He said QUOTE, “Every year we choose the baby who best exemplifies Gerber’s longstanding heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby. This year, Lucas is the perfect fit.”
