Think You Can Survive On 5 Hours Sleep?

There are a lot of myths dealing with sleep, and not all of them are harmless. A new study from New York University outlines a few of the myths that are bad for you, starting with the idea that you can get by with less than five hours of sleep a day.

Researcher Rebecca Robbins says doing so harms cardiovascular health, and people should try to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Robbins also said having a little alcoholic nightcap before getting to bed is a bad idea because it decreases the quality of sleep. Also a “no no?” Watching TV while you're trying to relax. That’s because TVs, smartphones and tablets emit blue light that can disrupt the body's delivery of the sleep hormone melatonin.

And one other thing. Snoring isn't always harmless. It can be a sign of a disorder called sleep apnea, which can lead to sleepiness during the daytime and vision problems. If you find yourself excessively tired and your sweetie has left you bruised from your log sawing every night . . . it might be a good idea to chat with your doctor.
