Your Filthy Sunglasses May Be Making You Breakout

For most of us, when we notice our sunglasses have a smudge, we give them a quick wipe down with our shirt and that seems to work. We don’t think about actually giving them a thorough cleaning, but we should because our beloved sunglasses could be the cause of breakouts.

“Anything dirty that touches your face can trigger a breakout by transferring bacteria,” explains Dr. Dendy Engelman, a New York City-based dermatologist. “Sunglasses can trigger acne since we tend to wear them in warm, humid weather. The combination of occlusion, sweat, dirt, and friction can clog pores, leading to a breakout.”

We need to protect our eyes from those powerful UV rays, but to keep our sunglasses from messing with our complexions, we need to sanitize them. But don’t reach for a chemical-filled, store-bought wipe that could irritate your skin. Instead use good old soap and water to wash them. If you tend to breakout, clean them every day, especially during warmer weather, and you’re good to go.
