Amateur Metal Detectives Discover A Literal Buried Treasure

A group of amateurs were out with their metal detectors scanning a field in Buckinghamshire, England, when they came across a treasure - literally, a buried treasure. After digging up plenty of shotgun shells and thimbles, the men were thrilled when they found 12 ornately decorated silver coins at first, but then they kept finding more and more coins.

Over the next four days, the guys excavated 557 coins and found out they were part of a hidden 14th century treasure hoard. Their haul includes 12 ultra-rare full gold nobles from the time of the Black Death, which are worth around $13,000 each. For now the coins are being kept safe in a museum and will be independently evaluated before being sold, but the “Hambledon Hoard,” as it’s nicknamed, could be worth $193,000!

The coins are believed to be the biggest gold hoard found in Britain in almost a decade and it’s suspected that they were stashed there for safekeeping by a wealthy person over 600 years ago! “It feels unreal,” admits Andrew Winter, one of the coin finders. “It couldn’t have happened to more common guys.”
