A New Leech Species Is Discovered In Washington, DC Area

There are some good politician jokes here!

Scientists with the Smithsonian say they've discovered a new leech in DC-area swamps. A paper was recently published in the Journal of Parasitology documenting the discovery of the leech, which is the first to be discovered on the continent in over 40 years.

The new species was found in a Southern Maryland swamp and has three jaws, each of which contain 56 to 59 teeth, and can suck five times their body weight in blood. It isn’t specific to Maryland, by the way. The creature has since been found along the Atlantic Coast and in the Appalachians.
