Grandma Uses Legos To Build Wheelchair Ramps

A woman in Germany found a creative way to make entries to shops and restaurants wheelchair-accessible. Rita Ebel has been using a wheelchair for 25 years since she was in a car accident and she became frustrated with all the places she couldn’t get in easily, so she came up with a low-tech fix: Legos.

The grandmother spends a few hours every day building with colorful Lego bricks to create made-to-order ramps for businesses. Rita sticks hundreds of Legos together to make them and glues the pieces together, so they won’t get taken apart by anyone once installed. The businesses love them because they make their entry ways accessible and the bright colors draw people’s attention and people in wheelchairs like being able to get in and out easily.

“For me, it is just about trying to sensitize the world a little bit to barrier-free travel,” Rita says.
