It’s a happy ending for a couple who got lost on a hike on Valentine’s Day and were missing for over a week. Carol Kiparsky, 77 and Ian Irwin, 72, were last seen on February 14th at their vacation rental home in Northern California before getting lost in “very dense” forest on their hike.
The pair suffered from hypothermia, but were able to keep themselves alive by “drinking from a puddle,” according to Sergeant Brenton Schneider of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. He says they hadn’t eaten in more than a week, but Ian found the strength to start singing as rescuers approached.
Hundreds of people searched for them, along with helicopters and K-9 teams, and officials had changed the rescue mission to a search and recovery effort, because they were presumed dead. Now their family is “ecstatic to say they least,” Sergeant Schneider says.
