Beetle Species Eaten By Frog Escapes Through The Butt

There are cool scientific studies and then there is this.

A new study, published in the journal Current Biology, shows that the water scavenger beetle, when eaten by a frog, will climb down the amphibian's intestinal tract and force it to poop the beetle out.

The key is, frogs don’t chew their food. Shinji Sugiura, the study's main researcher out of Japan's Kobe University, says he observed the tactic in five different types of frogs, with the effort taking anywhere from six minutes to two days, though most escape in four hours.

The beetle's hardy bodies may prevent them from being digested as they push themselves out. Researchers call the butt, a “vent.” The research is the first of its kind.
