Lifeguards Rescue Teens By Drone

The World’s first water rescue by drone just happened in Australia.  Lifeguards at Lennox Head in New South Wales were still training to use the new device when they had to test their skills to save a pair of teens.

Someone on the beach spotted the boys struggling in rough surf around 2,300-feet offshore.  Lifeguards immediately sent the drone, called the Little Ripper, and it dropped an inflatable rescue pod and the teens used it to make their way safely back to shore.

"It took only 70 seconds from when the Little Ripper drone was launched to when it dropped the pod into the ocean for the rescue, a task that would usually take a lifeguard up to six minutes to complete," explains Ben Franklin, parliamentary secretary for northern New South Wales.
