States and the federal government have been busy crafting laws that took affect on January 1.
One of the biggies is Real ID. This has been a gradual shift, but travelers, beginning in the fall, must have Real ID compliant driver’s license, passport, or other acceptable ID. If not, no traveling.
Here are some state laws that began to be enforced this year:
- Hawaii bans sunscreen containing coral and marine life damaging chemicals
- Delaware bans single use plastic shopping bags
- In Arizona and Virginia, you can be pulled over for holding a mobile phone while driving
- Illinois is depositing $50 into a college savings account for every child born in the state
- Mississippi has wiped out all remaining laws that made it illegal to possess alcohol
