Emojis are about to get even more inclusive, and there’s a good reason why it’s taken so long to get happen.
The Unicode Consortium, which overseas emojis, announced that Apple and Google are set to add 25 new multi skin toned handshake emojis next year. They actually were supposed to come out this year, but COVID forced the delay.
And if you are shocked these multicultural emoj is are just happening now, there’s actually a good reason. It turns out it creating such emojis aren’t that easy. In fact, these emojis have been years in the making, because an emoji is made of code, and to make them in different forms can be difficult. Jennifer Daniel, Google's creative director for emoji, says it took two years to make the 25 different combinations of various skin tones, since they need separate code for each hand.
