An Oscar-nominated actress will soon portray one of the world's best-loved dolls.
"Variety" says Margot Robbie, Mattel and Warner Brothers are joining forces to bring "Barbie" to the big screen. The feature will be directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig.
Robbie is starring in and producing the film through her LuckyChap production company. Details about the movie's plot as well as Barbie's friends such as Ken and Skipper are not being revealed. The Australian-born star earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for playing ice skater Tonya Harding in the movie "I, Tonya."
A Barbie movie was in development for years at Sony Pictures Entertainment -- but it never got off the ground.
