A new diamond has joined the ranks of the world’s rarest gemstones, and experts say this one may be more than rare…it might be unique. Discovered in Russia, the Matryoshka diamond only weighs .62 carats, but it has a smaller diamond in a cavity inside it. Experts believe the diamond-in-a-diamond is the first of its kind in the history of global diamond mining.
Scientists believe the inner diamond formed first, but scientists don’t understand how the second diamond formed while leaving air space around the smaller one. If it’s truly one-of-a-kind, this diamond might be worth a fortune; so far, no expert has put a potential price on the stone, which is currently being studied by scientists.
