Pistol Annies Drop First Christmas Song

Pistol Annies have a new Christmas album, “Hell of a Holiday.” The 13-track album from the trio of Miranda Lambert, Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe dropped on Friday.

It features a cover of Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December” that begins with Lambert singing the 1973 song and features the harmonies of Presley and Monroe. It’s one of the few non-originals on the new album and Lambert brings out the emotion of lines like, “I got laid off down at the factory/And their timing’s not the greatest in the world.”

Haggard’s version of the song was a Top 30 pop hit in 1973, and it became the biggest crossover success in his career. Since then, it’s been covered by Phoebe Bridgers, Dierks Bentley and Lucinda Williams. And “If We Make It Through December” isn’t even the first Haggard song Lambert has tackled, in 2017, she did a cover of “Misery and Gin.”
