Researchers are studying a fossil that's the first of its kind, the skull of a child who lived as much as 335-thousand years ago.
The skull of the child who was four to six years old is the first child known to belong to an ancient human relative called Homo naledi. It was found in 2017 in a cave system in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Africa known as the Cradle of Humankind.
While archaeologists found several skull fragments and six teeth, the rest of the child’s body was not found. The find challenges the idea that only modern humans buried their dead.
