Times Square New Year’s Eve Celebration Is Scaled Back As Omicron Surges

Omicron is setting records in New York and around the country, and that’s putting a damper on New Year’s Eve.

After New York City mayor Bill de Blasio touted that the Big Apple’s iconic celebration was back in full force, he had to put the brakes on.

The COVID stats have been shocking: Thursday afternoon's state report showed 38,835 positive tests in just one day, an increase of 10,000 from the day before. Of those, 22,208 were in New York City alone.

That’s why Times Square will only let in 15-thousand people to ring in the new year. That’s about a quarter of the normal crowd. Masks and vaccine cards will be required, unless someone is exempt. Then. they’ll have to show negative PCR tests to get in.

The mayor does say that more changes could happen later this week.
