Researchers think they have more clarity as to why traffic deaths went up during the pandemic. It turns out those drivers more concerned about risk actually stayed home. Those who were less worried went out. Specifically, we’re talking about 4% who “increased their time on the road” while everyone else was staying home. Those drivers “tended to be young, male, and more likely to speed, read texts while driving, not wear seat belts, or drive under the influence of alcohol or weed.” In 2020, over 38K people died in traffic accidents, which was the highest figure in over a decade for the U.S.
