Folks' obsession with the online word game Wordle doesn’t seem to be dying down although players have been unhappy ever since it was sold to the "New York Times" in January. Many have complained that it’s gotten harder, and apparently that’s led to an increase in cheating,
According to a study by Wordfinderx, since January, when the Times bought the puzzle, online searches for the answer have increased 196%. Before the purchase, on a scale of 0 to 100 Google searches for “today’s wordle” were at a zero, but by mid-February it was all the way up to 100.
“Cheating for the game is at an all-time high and only growing,” the study claims.
And apparently some words warranted larger searches than others, particularly “swill” and “aroma,” which both landed at 100 on the scale.
- And it seems some states are bigger cheaters than others. Folks in New Hampshire are the worst cheaters, with Vermont and Rhode Island in second, followed by Washington, DC and Massachusetts.
