A powerful solar storm is hitting Earth today and setting off a spectacular Northern Lights show.
That's the upside of an overactive sunspot that fired off flares Monday. A potential downside is that those charged clouds can make a mess of the planet's magnetic fields, disrupting satellites, electric grids, and telecommunications networks.
However, NOAA said yesterday that the most likely effect is aurora displays as far south as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.
