We're not saying the sourdough trend is over, but we are saying there's a new trend taking over kitchens: cooking like your grandma did. Rather than just tossing things into their grocery carts, more and more people are making them from scratch. Old-school kitchen skills like pickling, fermenting, preserving and making pantry staples are officially back.
So, where are people finding these recipes? Pinterest. According to the platform's fall trend report, searches for homemade spice blends are up a whopping 209%, while kombucha SCOBY recipes jumped 201%. Searches for strawberry lemonade concentrate canning are up 110%, fermenting is up 106%, indoor herb gardens are up 50% and pickled beet canning recipes are up 42%.
People are realizing that making these things at home is a lot simpler than they thought. And what exactly are they making? Think no-cook jam, spice rubs, mayonnaise, pickles, tahini, butter, sriracha, flour tortillas, ricotta and apple butter. Of course, most people aren't making all of these from scratch at once. They're picking one to start with, and using the time they'd normally spend scrolling to get in the kitchen instead.
