Tonight is the Geminid Meteor Shower!

Tonight is the Geminid Meteor Shower!

The Geminids are spawned by pieces of debris from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. Every December, Earth’s orbit crosses the asteroid’s and those particles burn up in Earth’s atmosphere. This year, Phaethon will fly its closest distance to Earth since its discovery in 1983.

No matter where you are viewing, NASA says the meteor shower will reach its peak between 7:30 p.m. on December 13 and dawn the morning of December 14.

And if you can't make it out, or if skies are cloudy, you can watch NASA's Geminids webcast live here.
