GRAMMY-winning musician, songwriter and producer Randy Scruggs died Tuesday after a short illness. He was 64.
Scruggs, son of banjo legend Earl Scruggs, produced music for such artists as Waylon Jennings, Levon Helm, Emmylou Harris, Diamond Rio, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Toby Keith, Dwight Yoakam, Loretta Lynn, and more.
He also played on hundreds of albums, including Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” as well as albums by Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, George Strait, Charlie Daniels, Vince Gill, and more, and co-wrote several songs with Earl Thomas Conley, including “Your Love’s On the Line,” “Don’t Make It Easy For Me,” and “Angel in Disguise.” Thanks to Scruggs, Conley was the first artist to have four consecutive number one songs come from the same album.
He’s also the winner of four GRAMMYs, the most recent being in 2005, when he won Best Country Instrumental Performance for his work on Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Earl's Breakdown”
Scruggs is survived by his wife Sandy, his daughter, Lindsey, and his brother, Gary.
