Back-To-School Shopping Is A Major Cause Of Stress

While for most of us it seems like summer has just begun, and school is likely the last thing on most kids’ minds, there are loads of parents already thinking about the new school year to come, and they have lots to worry about.

A new Back-to-School survey finds that 70% of parents say back-to-school shopping is stressful, and the rising costs of school expenses, and pressure to buy the latest fashions isn’t helping. Overall, 67% of parents say school costs are increasing, with 47% saying they plan to spend between $101 and $300 per child.

And the costs don’t stop there. The survey finds that 90% of parents will have added expenses during the year, for things like extracurricular activities, field trips projects and more, with two-thirds of parents saying those costs could result in an additional $51 to $300 spent this year. As for the biggest back-to-school expense, most parents agree it’s clothing, with 60% of parents saying their kids' need to keep up with the latest fashions can cost a pretty penny.

  • And when it comes to actually doing the shopping, 60% say they do their back-to-school shopping with their kids, although 49% who do shop with their kids say they spend more than if they shopped without their kids (32%).
