Smith College Investigates Police Being Called On Black Student - An elite college is under fire for a racial profiling incident.

An outside investigator is being hired by Smith College in Massachusetts to review an incident from earlier this week when the police were called on a black student. The teaching assistant and student was eating lunch in the common area on Tuesday when she was approached by an officer, who was called by a college employee.

The employee thought the student seemed out of place, according to college president Kathleen McCartney. She said in a letter to students, staff and faculty that the incident is a painful reminder of the ongoing legacy of racism. McCartney added that every college staff member will be required to go through anti-bias training.

Oumou Kanoute, the woman profiled, wrote about the encounter on Facebook saying, “It’s outrageous that some people question my being at Smith College, and my existence overall as a women of color. I did nothing wrong, I wasn’t making any noise or bothering anyone. All I did was be black.”

The college has apologized, but Kanoute wants the person who called officers to be identified.Source: Daily Hampshire Gazette
