CDC Releases 2017 Flu Statistics

The CDC is pushing for people to get the flu vaccine after the death rate last year hit a four decade high.

The agency says 80-thousand Americans died from the flu last season. That means the flu killed more people than traffic collisions, gun violence and opioid overdoses last year. It's also a big spike in flu deaths - a severe flu season usually kills less than 60-thousand Americans.

The CDC pins the increase on the H3 virus, which is especially deadly among children and the elderly. Flu season runs until spring, and the CDC is urging everyone to get their flu shot now.
