Study: Eating Cottage Cheese Before Bed Can Help Weight Loss

When it comes to weight loss, we have it in our heads that to drop pounds we have to choke down foods that we don’t really love, like kale. And to lose weight, we usually do need to cut out some of our less healthy food choices, especially late night snacks, but according to new research, there’s one thing we can eat before bed that could actually help us lose weight: cottage cheese.

A new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition finds that low-calorie, high-protein foods like cottage cheese can help boost metabolism and overall well being, while you sleep. And it doesn’t even have to be a lot of cottage cheese, two tablespoons an hour before bedtime could improve health and help shed pounds.

It’s a protein called casein in cottage cheese that has slow-releasing characteristics and can deliver important amino acids steadily throughout the night that makes it a good bedtime snack. Professor Michael Ormsbee from Florida State University says this research is important because “it gives people options for pre-sleep nutrition that go beyond powders and shaker bottles.” So if you’re tired of drinking a protein shake or taking a supplement at night, cottage cheese could be just the food you’re looking for.
