1/13/19 Evening Road Conditions From VDOT

STAUNTON – (5:30 p.m.) Major snowfall has stopped in the Shenandoah Valley area. Some snow continued to fall in the northern part of the Valley during the afternoon. Virginia Department of Transportation crews will continue to monitor and clear roads throughout the night.

Motorists should be alert for refreezing of wet road surfaces. Roads may look clear or damp but actually may have a thin layer of ice, which can result in icy spots.  Extreme caution should be used for all travel in the Shenandoah Valley as night falls.  Seat belts should be used by all vehicle occupants.

Here are the road conditions as of 5:30 p.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Minor conditions in Alleghany and Augusta counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge County.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Fredrick County. Minor conditions in Augusta and Shenandoah counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge and Rockingham counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Frederick, Warren and Clarke counties. Minor conditions in Alleghany, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Page counties. Clear conditions in Highland, Rockbridge and Bath counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren, Clarke and Page counties. Minor conditions in Highland and Bath counties.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
