STAUNTON – (5:30 a.m.) Snow continues to fall Sunday morning in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands, and most roadways are snow-covered and slick. The Virginia Department of Transportation advises motorists to avoid non-emergency travel.
VDOT crews and contractors are working around the clock to plow and treat roads. Interstates and primary roads are plowed first, followed by secondary roads and subdivision streets. VDOT’s goal is to make all state-maintained roadways passable within 48 hours after the end of a snowstorm.
Here are the road conditions as of 5:30 a.m. in the 11-county VDOT Staunton District:
Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.
Interstate 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.
Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.
Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.
Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.
